Massively step up protection of critical infrastructure

Sweden reports 4th leak on Nord Stream pipelines

"Recent events in several parts of Europe remind us how important the protection of critical infrastructure is. It is essential for the well-being and functioning of our European societies", said Lukas Mandl MEP, EPP Group negotiator on the Resilience of Critical Entities Directive.

He spoke ahead of the planned vote tonight on the new law which is aimed at protecting critical services and infrastructure in the EU, such as energy, transport, health, and drinking water, against risks and threats such as terrorism, sabotage, hybrid attacks and natural disasters. The vote will take place in the Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

The acts of sabotage against the German railway system and the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea are only two recent examples of how vulnerable our critical services and infrastructure are.

"Ongoing attacks against our critical services and infrastructure weaken our living conditions. An attack with very serious consequences could even happen tomorrow. Precaution is the order of the day, be it protection measures, emergency plans, exercises or awareness raising", said Mandl.

The final plenary vote on the new law is expected to take place in November.
