EPP Group to discuss future of Europe in Rome

The EPP Group will travel today to the Vatican and Rome to discuss the future of Europe and the role of Christianity.

“The next years are decisive years for European Christian democracy. We must continue to make tough choices to build a people’s Europe”, said EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber MEP ahead of the two-day visit.

Today, the Order of Malta will host a debate on Christianity and Europe’s responsibility in the world with leading Church representatives. EPP Group Members will discuss with Bishop Mariano Crociata, President of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conference of the European Union, Riccardo Paterno’ Di Montecupo, Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, Prefect Emeritus of the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches, and Bishop Mirosław Stanisław Wachowski, Under-Secretary for Relations with States for the Holy See. An in-depth debate on the role of Christian values in European integration processes will follow.

“We are witnessing too much shyness regarding the defence of Christianity. The EPP Group meeting in Rome wants to emphasise exactly the need for stronger proof on the side of Christians”, said Fulvio Martusciello MEP, Head of the Italian Delegation (FI) of the EPP Group in the European Parliament.

“Times are changing and we must change with them. We must shape our European way of life. By doing so, we must cherish and uphold our values. Without these Christian values, our European way of life would lose its soul; Europe would lose its soul”, concluded Weber.
