The European Parliament decided today to cancel a delegation visit to Lebanon, originally scheduled for the end of the week, due to serious security risks following the spillover of the Syrian crisis to that country.

After the decision, MEP Mário David warned Damascus, on behalf of the EPP Group, against any spillover of the Syrian crisis to neighbouring countries. "The international community will not tolerate such an attitude," he underlined.

He also expressed his deep concern over Friday's bomb attack in the Ashrafiyeh district of the Lebanese capital, a predominantly Christian area, that killed Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan and seven other persons, and also about the subsequent weekend riots in Beirut that killed four more people.

Mr David expresses his sincerest condolences and strong solidarity with the people of Lebanon.

Despite the riots, Mário David said he hopes the situation in Lebanon will settle and that calm will return to the streets.
