EU stands ready to defend the European choice of Moldova
The Foreign Affairs Committee gave its consent today to the ratification of the Association Agreement between the EU and Moldova. The EPP Group Spokesperson for Security and Defence and Shadow Rapporteur on the European Parliament´s initiative report accompanying the Agreement, Michael Gahler MEP, welcomed the majority vote and underlined the positive message given by the European Parliament: “Today's vote sends a clear message from the European Parliament to Moldovan citizens: we stand by your choice to embrace European values and to look forward to a dignified future for your country. We encourage Member States to follow our example and ratify the Agreement as soon as possible.”
Michael Gahler highlighted the growing external and internal pressure on Moldova: “After this vote the EU must stand ready to support the European choice and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova against any Russian retaliatory actions, following the conclusion of the Association Agreement.”
The EPP Group Shadow Rapporteur underlined the benefits of the decision: “The Association Agreement is only the first step in the broader process linked to Moldova's European prospects. Thanks to the political determination of its Government, Moldova has made significant progress in reforms and strengthening relations with the EU. This pace must be kept up. Moldova needs to consolidate its judicial and educational system and renew its infrastructure to meet EU standards and to make the real benefits of this Agreement tangible to its citizens. Its immediate implementation is important for creating growth and jobs."
However, the EPP Group Spokesperson for Security and Defence also issued a warning that the pro-Russians in Moldova should not be underestimated: “Currently Russia is trying to influence Moldovan foreign policy through applying economic pressure. In addition, the Communist Party frightened many citizens about potential losses on financial markets and that it will be hard to compete with the EU. Our counter response is simple: the European Union is an area of freedom and democracy where all citizens' rights are respected. We want to see a strong, stable and sovereign Moldova, following its own aspirations.”
