EPP Group to discuss energy security and defence in Katowice

The EPP Group will hold its Bureau meeting in Katowice on 3 and 4 September to discuss its policy on the external dimension of energy security and defence. As external and internal aspects in both security and energy are intertwined, MEPs will tackle the key issues on how to ensure higher external energy supply for the European Union and to make sure the EU is able to ensure the protection of its citizens in the changing security context.

While EU imports count for more than a half of its overall energy consumption, the EPP Group aims at decreasing its energy dependency on a single supplier and to increase its resilience to external geopolitical pressure. As regards defence, the EPP Group considers that security and defence should remain at the very centre of the European agenda and that all existing tools and military capabilities and instruments should be used to their full capacity.

The meeting will bring together the EPP Group Presidency and Bureau, including EPP Group Chairman Manfred Weber, Vice-Chairpersons Françoise Grossetête and Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, Heads of the Polish Delegation of the EPP Group, Jan Olbrycht and Andrzej Grzyb, the Chairman of the European Parliament's Industry, Research and Energy Committee, Jerzy Buzek, representatives of the Polish Government and European experts in the field of energy as well as defence.
