EPP Group to assess democratic reforms in Hungary six months after the elections
More than six months after the elections of 12 April, which brought a change of government in Hungary, the EPP Group in the European Parliament is sending a mission to the country from 5 to 6 November to take stock of political and institutional developments. The mission and a conference dedicated to the new chapter in EU-Hungary relations will focus on efforts to tackle corruption, strengthen media freedom and civil society, restore the rule of law and promote democratic participation.
The EPP Group delegation will meet with representatives of the Hungarian government, members of the parliament and representatives of civil society to exchange views on the reforms undertaken and the challenges ahead.
"Hungary has turned a page. The TISZA government is working to rebuild democracy, restore the rule of law and renew citizens’ trust in public institutions. This is a historic undertaking, and the EPP Group stands firmly behind TISZA as it delivers on this mandate," stated Tomas Tobé MEP, the EPP Group’s Vice-Chair responsible for Justice and Home Affairs.
"TISZA has a historic mandate to rebuild a Hungary where institutions serve citizens, public money is spent responsibly, and no one is above the law. In just six months, important steps have been taken to dismantle political patronage, restore accountability and rebuild institutional trust. This is only the beginning: our goal is to make democracy, transparency and equal treatment lasting foundations of Hungarian public life. We are committed to delivering the change Hungarians voted for and welcome the continued support of our European People’s Party family," says Eszter Lakos MEP, Vice-President of the EPP Group and head of the TISZA delegation.
