Member of the European Parliament David Casa has called on national Governments within the European Union to move forward on the SURE proposal.

The SURE (Support to mitigate Unemployment Risks in an Emergency) programme, will provide financial assistance in the form of loans granted on favourable terms from the EU to Member States, of up to €100 billion. This will allow member states to enhance and expand their short-term work schemes that have proved to be crucial to secure employment and avoid redundancies.

“We need it as soon as possible. It must be implemented without delay,” stated MEP David Casa during a speech he delivered during the Plenary Session in Brussels this morning.

“The social crisis, this pandemic will leave behind, could cause more damage than the virus itself. We must do even more, not only to save lives, but also to secure livelihoods. We must go further to support SMEs, which are the backbone of our economies,” Casa said.

David Casa, who as a Quaestor forms part of Parliament’s administration, is also Parliament’s rapporteur for the European Social Fund Plus. “This tool, together with the Multi-Financial Framework, is crucial to provide support for workers and to bolster the capacity of our healthcare systems. We are doing everything possible to make new Funds operational next year, but this shouldn’t stop us from also working on contingency measures to make absolutely certain that funds will continue to reach those in need,” Casa said.

In conclusion, David Casa made a strong appeal: “Our citizens are depending on us to rise to the occasion. We must not let them down.”
