The President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Mr Yiannakis Omirou had a meeting with the Vice-President of the EPP Mariya Gabriel in the presence of the Head of the EPP Cyprus Delegation MEP Eleni Theocharous. During the meeting both Mr Omirou and Mrs Theocharous explained to Mrs Gabriel about the Turkish actions within the EEZ of Cyprus and the reason why these actions not only do they threaten the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus -an EU member state- but they also jeopardize the security of the EU and of the wider region, which already suffers from the ISIS war. Mr Omirou and Mrs Theocharous underlined that the gas resources of Cyprus fall into the EU energy policy. Therefore, protecting Cyprus gas resources and its' sovereign rights is synonymous to the protection of EU interests, in terms of solidarity. Mrs Gabriel was well informed about the Turkish actions and fully supports the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus. She also deems that the interests of Cyprus are in line with those of the EU. In this regard, it is a legal and political duty of the EP to openly express its support.
