Strengthen EU energy market and invest in energy infrastructure

Ahead of an emergency Energy Council meeting next Friday, the EPP Group calls for concrete measures to address rising energy prices for people and businesses. The EU energy market must be strengthened and investments in the European energy infrastructure are needed to send strong signals to the markets, which could drop energy prices. The EPP Group urges EU Member States not to fall back into intergovernmental reflexes, which lead to fragmentation and eventually, insufficient national strategies.

Ukrainians represented by Zelensky for Sakharov Prize

On Monday, it will become clearer who will win Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought at the end of this year. At a joint meeting of the Committees of Foreign Affairs, Development and Human Rights, the political groups in the European Parliament will present their candidates for the prestigious award. At the beginning of September, the EPP Group was the first to propose the Ukrainian people represented by President Volodymyr Zelensky. “The Ukrainian people managed to stop the most brutal military invasion of the 21st century. Dedicating the Sakharov Prize for the Freedom of Thought to them is a mere symbol of our gratefulness and understanding that Ukraine is defending our common European values", said Rasa Juknevičienė MEP, EPP Group Vice-Chair responsible for foreign affairs.

Additional liability rules for high-risk Artificial Intelligence systems

On Wednesday, the European Commission will present its law proposal for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) liability regime. During the legislative procedure, the EPP Group will push for strong liability rules for all high-risk AI systems. “AI systems such as self-driving cars or parcel delivery drones can potentially endanger an unpredictable number of innocent people. We need strict liability rules for these high-risk applications. However, at the same time, we should be careful that the great potential of AI systems for our society is not hindered by over-regulation”, said the EPP Group’s Legal Affairs Spokesman, Axel Voss MEP, who has spearheaded a legislative Own-initiative Report on the issue.
