“Losses of €10 billion, performers and artists working as postmen or drivers: this is the 2020 reality for the media and audiovisual sector hit by the COVID-19 economic crisis. Immediate financial injections from EU recovery funds and long-term dedicated financial streams are now a matter of the survival of European culture and high quality media”, said Michaela Šojdrová MEP, the EPP Group’s Culture Spokeswoman.

The EPP Group welcomes today’s proposal by the European Commission to help the news and audiovisual sectors during this economic crisis and to boost their potential beyond it.

Sabine Verheyen MEP, Chairwoman of the Culture and Education Committee, added: “Our common aim now is to translate this urgent plan into concrete action. I will make sure that the Culture and Education Committee works quickly with the Commission and representatives of the sector to transform these commitments from paper to reality. There is no time to wait. Cultural and media recovery in Europe is at stake.”
