Speaking in Brussels, EPP Group Vice-Chairwoman Françoise Grossetête MEP said: "In December 2013, Ireland was the first country in the EU to successfully exit a programme of financial assistance and has since demonstrated significant economic growth. This followed a series of extremely difficult fiscal adjustment measures which were necessary to repair public finances."

"The Irish Parliament has since formally empowered a Committee of Inquiry to conduct a formal investigation into the events surrounding the Irish banking collapse. The Committee has begun its work and is hearing from the key people and institutions involved in the Irish banking crisis."

"The Troika institutions were deeply involved in key decisions for Ireland throughout the banking crisis, particularly through engagement with the Irish Government and the Irish Central Bank."

"The EPP Group supports the full cooperation of all Troika institutions - the ECB, the European Commission and the IMF - in this Inquiry. Their cooperation is important for the integrity and transparency of European institutions as well as to promote the trust of European citizens in the actions taken by these institutions," continued MEP Grossetête, who oversees Economy and Environment policy within the Group.

"The EPP Group welcomes Taoiseach Enda Kenny's engagement with the ECB. Clearly, progress is being made. A way needs to be found to satisfy the proper flow of information between the ECB and the Irish authorities."

"All European citizens deserve an explanation regarding many of the decisions that were taken during the banking crisis," she concluded.
