“The Polish government’s targeting of judges, the same judges defending the rule of law in Poland, must stop immediately. It is unacceptable in a democratic country and an EU Member State. The signing of the ‘muzzle law’ by Poland's President is another step on the path to the erosion of the rule of law in Poland, which we have been witnessing since the end of 2015”, said Roberta Metsola MEP, EPP Group Spokeswoman on Justice and Home Affairs.

“The place of Poland and the Polish people is at the heart of Europe. It is disquieting how the Polish Government insists on pushing Poland further away from Europe and the values that is represents. The Polish people deserve better”, she added.

“We expect the European Commission to take decisive action, including filing a complaint to the European Court of Justice and immediately applying interim measures which would prevent further repression against the judges defending the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. We expect that at the next plenary, the EC informs MEPs about actions taken on this matter”,  added Andrzej Halicki, Head of the Polish (PO) Delegation in the EPP Group.
