Born in 1939. Professional diplomat. Ambassador of Czecho-Slovakia to the UN, 1989-1993. Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the UN, 1993 - 1994. Minister of Foreign Affairs in the coalition government in 1994. In 1998 helped establish the Slovak Democratic Coalition (SDK) and became its Deputy Chairman. Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1998. Co-founder of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKU). Minister of Foreign Affairs, 2002-2006. Under his mandate the Slovak Republic received invitations to join both NATO and the EU. Currently Member of Parliament. Since the establishment of SDKU, he serves as a Vice-Chairman of SDKU-DS responsible for foreign policy. MEP since 2009.
