Our work with non-EU countries

In the European Parliament, the EU's external affairs activities are handled, in addition to the Foreign Affairs, Development, and International Trade Committees, by Interparliamentary Delegations. Their main task is to maintain and develop the Parliament’s international contacts by providing specific expertise in the form of practical knowledge and political understanding of situations, and of individuals, in the countries and regions for which they are responsible. Over the past years, the role of Interparliamentary Delegations has become increasingly important, effectively becoming a form of parliamentary diplomacy.

Interparliamentary Assembly
Members of the European Parliament also participate in a number of assemblies of national parliamentarians. These assemblies are the Assembly of EU, African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, of Euro-Mediterranean countries, of Euro-Latin American countries, of EU, Eastern European and South Caucasus countries and the NATO Member Countries' Assembly.
Interparliamentary Delegation (IPM)
These interparliamentary delegations are established by a decision by the European Parliament to strengthen the parliamentary dimension of our dialogue with a large number of third countries worldwide. Examples are Iran, Iraq, Japan, China and India.
Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC)
Joint Parliamentary Committees are established with candidate countries or countries that have signed Association Agreements with the EU. They are composed by an equal number of Members from both the European Parliament and the respective partner parliament. In the case of candidate countries, the JPC assesses the progress towards accession. Examples of Joint Parliamentary Committees are Croatia and FYROM (EU candidates) and Mexico and Chile (under the Association Agreement).
Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (PCC)
Parliamentary Cooperation Committees are based on specific agreements with the countries which are part of the 'European Neighbourhood Policy' (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) and with those with which Europe has concluded Partnership and Cooperation Agreements (PCA) such as Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan. Their role is to follow the implementation of the PCA.
Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee (SAPC)
Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committees are set up with those South East European countries where the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) have entered into force. Examples are Albania and Montenegro.
Transatlantic Legislators Dialogue
This is a special type of interparliamentary cooperation. Its task is to enhance parliamentary ties between the European Union and the US Congress, and support the activity developed by the EP Delegation for relations with the United States.
