Copyright in the Digital Single Market

On Wednesday 20 June, Members of the Legal Affairs Committee will vote on the long-awaited Copyright Directive. The EPP Group seeks a balance between the right holders and artists and internet users on the other side. The aim of the Directive is to adapt copyright rules to the new realities of the 21st century. The EPP Group is of the opinion that platforms who develop their commercial activities on uploaded creative content need to fairly remunerate the creators. In this respect, quality journalism in Europe is also to be maintained by protecting the legal certainty of the publishers against some news aggregators that use the content of press publications without contributing to sustaining the investments in their creation.

€500 million towards stronger EU defence

An increase in cooperation in the defence industry and strengthening the competitiveness of the EU defence industry are core priorities. On Tuesday, the deal with the Council to allocate €500 million in 2019 and 2020 to the European Defence Industrial Development Programme will be confirmed in the Industry Committee. It is a completely new programme aimed at cross-EU country development of EU defence capabilities, for instance drones for military use or a European cyber defence mechanism. In the future, increased pan-EU cooperation in the big weapons systems - aircraft, battle tanks, and navy ships - could and should be foreseen.

Veterinary medicinal products

On Wednesday, the Environment Committee will confirm the agreement on veterinary medicinal products reached between the European Parliament, Commission and Council in June. Amongst others, the agreement provides for solutions limiting the processes in human bodies in which bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. "The fight against antibiotic resistance, a real scourge for public health, begins on breeding farms", says Françoise Grossetête MEP, the EPP Group’s negotiator on the file, explaining that the misuse of antibiotics in animal healthcare is one of the causes of antibiotic resistance in people.
