Towards new rules on the posting of workers

Members of the Employment Committee will vote on the final agreement between the Commission, the Parliament and the Council on the revision of the Posting of Workers Directive. The new rules aim to better protect workers who are temporarily transferred from one EU country to another, to fight against unfair competition and to ensure a level playing field for companies in the Single Market. Among several other points, the agreement sets up a 12-month limit for posting with the possibility of a 6-month extension, the introduction of allowances, a two-year transposition period with immediate implementation and keeping reference to a lex specialis for international road transport.

Action needed to combat mileage fraud in Europe

The Transport Committee will demand action from the European Commission on mileage fraud in Europe on Wednesday. In cross-border car sales, research shows that up to 50% of the odometers are tampered with, with economic costs for buyers and business running into billions of Euros every year. The EPP Group is strongly arguing for the immediate creation of a European system where up-to-date mileage-reading databases can be accessed by prospective buyers, modelled on the Belgian and Dutch systems. Shadow Rapporteur for the EPP Group, Georges Bach MEP, also insists on the negative effects of mileage manipulation on road safety and the unexpected maintenance and repair costs for buyers.

Dual quality products in the Single Market

As a consumer in the EU, you have the right to be treated equally with others. A high-level conference to discuss the discriminatory practice of dual quality products in the Eastern and Western European markets will take place at the European Parliament on 25 April at 11.00 hrs, Room ASP 05E3. European decision-makers, representatives from consumer organisations and from the industry as well as the European Commission will discuss the progress achieved so far and what should still be done further to eliminate the unfair consumer treatment.

Better law-making

On Wednesday, the Members of the Legal Affairs and the Constitutional Affairs Committees will meet at the joint session to vote on the Report on the interpretation and implementation of the inter-institutional agreement on better law-making which entered into force in 2016. The agreement between the Parliament, the Commission and the Council ensures that the new laws better serve the needs of Europeans. The report reassesses the current practice and experiences with the agreement.
