Comisia pentru libertăți civile, justiție și afaceri interne este competentă în chestiuni privind protecția, pe teritoriul Uniunii Europene, a drepturilor cetățenilor, a drepturilor omului și a drepturilor fundamentale, inclusiv protecția minorităților, astfel cum sunt enunțate în tratate și în Carta drepturilor fundamentale a Uniunii Europene. Ea se ocupă de protecția datelor personale. Comisia se ocupă, de asemenea, de politica privind azilul și migrația, de gestionarea integrată a frontierelor externe și de cooperarea polițienească și judiciară în materie penală.
