Press Release
17/06/2009EPP Group up and running. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group
Today, the most influential Group in the European Parliament, representing the Centre-Right in Europe, went back to its roots as the Group of the European People's Party (EPP), following the departure of the British Conservative and Czech ODS MEPs."The EPP was the big winner at the European Elections", highlighted Joseph Daul MEP to the 263 EPP Members of the European Parliament. "We won because we spoke to our citizens about Europe; because, while respecting its values in this changing world, the EPP chose the path of progress and reform."
The EPP Group would like one of its own to become the next President of the European Parliament.
The Group also wants the current President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, to continue in his position. The EPP Group has proposed that Mr Barroso commits to a 5-year legislative pact based on the main priorities of the EPP Warsaw Manifesto: social market economy, security, subsidiarity, borders and a clear European identity.
The EPP Group will elect its new Presidency on 23 June.
