Award of the Robert Schuman Medal to Mr Tadeusz Mazowiecki, former Prime Minister of Poland

EPP-ED Group Chairman Hans-Gert Poettering will award the Group's Schuman Medal to the former Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki in a formal celebration during the EPP-ED Group meeting on Wednesday, 16 February.

The Schuman Medal is an honour presented to people who have made outstanding contributions to European integration. The medal is named after the former French Minister for Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, who in 1950, together with Jean Monnet, proposed the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community - a date which marks the beginning of European Unification. The medal has been awarded, amongst others, to Chancellor Helmut Kohl (in 1986), the former Dutch Prime Minister, Ruud Lubbers (in 1991), the former President of France and President of the EU-Convention, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing (in 1993) and Pope John Paul II (in 2004).
