The EPP Group Chairman in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, expressed his support today to the Speaker of the Venezuelan Parliament, Julio Borges, to enable Venezuela to overcome the serious crisis it is experiencing in a peaceful and democratic manner, and to ensure that all political prisoners are released and human rights are respected.
During a meeting with Borges in Brussels, Weber argued that to achieve all these objectives it is necessary and urgent to convene free elections supported by international observers.
"It is also crucial that the separation of powers be respected and the harassment against the Parliament (Asamblea Nacional) by the Nicolás Maduro government be stopped", Weber said.
The Chairman called for the immediate release of all political prisoners imprisoned in Venezuela: "This is necessary to make reconciliation possible and to rebuild people's trust after years of human rights violations in Venezuela.”
“I lament that in recent years, the situation in the country has deteriorated seriously at all levels, even causing a humanitarian crisis that must be tackled urgently, allowing international aid."
Weber recalled the permanent support of the EPP Group for democracy and freedoms in Venezuela which, since the 2004 referendum, has been denouncing the Venezuelan government's policies that have caused the current serious situation in the country.
