“The EU Single Market will benefit from the new Directive which lays down specific criteria that Member States have to consider when conducting a proportionality test for professional regulation”, said Andreas Schwab MEP, the EPP Group Spokesman in the European Parliament’s Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, at today’s debate in the European Parliament.

“50 million people in the EU work in regulated professions. That is the equivalent of 22% of the European labour force. The new Directive will make sure that they are no longer hindered from exercising their profession in another Member State because of unproportionate professional regulation."

“The EPP Group successfully secured fair treatment for health professions, ensuring that citizens' health is protected at the highest level“, said Schwab ahead of tomorrow’s vote on the European Parliament’s position.

“It is an important gain for our citizens that we succeeded in strengthening the role of craftwork qualifications“, he concluded.

The EPP Group successfully managed to ensure that the proportionality principle also applies to the temporary provision of cross-border services.

This will help to make sure the freedom of movement in the EU is rightfully guaranteed when working in another Member State.

Note to Editors
The EPP Group is the largest political group in the European Parliament with 219 Members from 28 Member States
