Europe must show Trump and Putin that it's standing up for its values

“In Valletta, EU leaders must show the world that Europe is standing up for its values when they are at stake”, said Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, in a speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday 1 February.

We want a strong partnership with the US on trade but also in the fight against terrorism. The US is our closest ally. But Donald Trump wants Europe to be split and weak. So does Russian President Vladimir Putin. The world is at a crossroads. This is why we need to show them that we are united and strong and that Europeans are standing up for their values.”

“The United States used to be the country of freedom, of free market economy, of human rights. Now it is banning certain citizens based on religion, it opposes free trade negotiations and it justifies the use of torture. Roosevelt and Churchill used to fight together to defend freedoms. Reagan and Thatcher used to fight together against Communism. Now Trump and May are just fighting for national egoism", Weber concluded.

We stand beside US in fight against terror. There can be no general suspicion of people due to their beliefs. #EUCO must express EU values.
