"We will only accept a transitional period after Brexit if we are satisfied with the outcome of the second phase of negotiations", warned Manfred Weber MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, today.

"United, the European Union is strong. Alone, the United Kingdom is in a difficult position. This is the main lesson of today's result in the Brexit negotiations", he said.

"The fact that some concrete progress has been made is at last good news. But there are still plenty of open questions and uncertainties. The EPP Group will take a very close look at the results reached between negotiators. We promised the millions of EU citizens living in the UK that we will defend their rights and we will continue to do so, just like we will continue backing Irish interests. It will be much more difficult to achieve good results in the second phase of the negotiations."
