De Commissie werkgelegenheid en sociale zaken is bevoegd voor het werkgelegenheidsbeleid en alle aspecten van het sociaal beleid, zoals arbeidsomstandigheden, sociale zekerheid en sociale bescherming. Tot haar werkingssfeer behoren ook kwesties als gezondheids- en veiligheidsmaatregelen op het werk, het beroepsopleidingsbeleid, met inbegrip van beroepskwalificaties, het vrij verkeer van werknemers en gepensioneerden en alle vormen van discriminatie op de werkplek en op de arbeidsmarkt, met uitzondering van discriminatie op grond van geslacht, aangezien de Commissie rechten van de vrouw en gendergelijkheid zich hiermee bezighoudt.
