De voorbije jaren werden Europese burgers zwaar getroffen door terrorisme. Terwijl sommige terreurdreigingen afgewend werden, toonden een aantal aanslagen aan dat zowel de wetgeving als de samenwerking tussen de lidstaten tekortschiet. Om deze tekortkomingen aan te pakken, heeft het Europees Parlement, op initiatief van de EVP-Fractie, een speciale commissie voor terrorisme opgericht. De commissie zal de bestaande juridische en praktische instrumenten in de strijd tegen terrorisme nader bekijken en aanbevelingen formuleren om de gaten in de samenwerking en de informatie-uitwisseling tussen de nationale autoriteiten te dichten. De terrorismecommissie gaat van start in september 2017 en heeft een termijn van 12 maanden.
