De Commissie burgerlijke vrijheden, justitie en binnenlandse zaken is bevoegd voor de bescherming van de rechten van de burger op het grondgebied van de EU, mensenrechten en grondrechten, met inbegrip van de bescherming van minderheden, als verankerd in de Verdragen en het Handvest van de grondrechten van de Europese Unie. Zij behandelt kwesties betreffende bescherming van persoonsgegevens. Zij behandelt regels betreffende migratie en asiel, het geïntegreerde beheer van gemeenschappelijke grenzen en politiële en justitiële samenwerking in strafzaken.
