Motorcycling is my life. Now it is safer and cleaner

Politics is a great profession. However, it is hard work that requires time. And working for the European Parliament involves many hours of travel. The weekly schedule is full with committee meetings, political party meetings and visits out in the field. So a politician needs a hobby to relax.

Motorcycling is the best way to relax for me. For over 30 years I have toured through the Netherlands and other EU countries. This hobby clears the mind and provides political focus. I own several motorcycles, so you could say my hobby has got a little out of hand.

Work and play: when passion meets profession

You are a real kingmaker when you can combine your work and your hobby. So I was very happy to be made Rapporteur (responsible for defining Parliament's position) on the ‘Powered Two-wheeler Regulation’, which dealt with the technical, security and environmental requirements for mopeds, scooters and motorcycles. This report is very technical and complex, but very important to guaranteeing the safety of motorcyclists.

We introduced the new ABS/CBS brake system, new emission requirements (Euro 4/Euro 5) and a self-analysis of the motorcycle (On Board Diagnostics). Motorcycles therefore became safer and cleaner. This also counts for scooters in Spain and Italy, for example.

Implementing the same requirements in all Member States boosts the internal market

Moreover this report is very important for a well-functioning internal market. After all, motorcycles that have been produced on the Italian market can now be directly sold in other EU countries.

Motorcycles produced in countries outside the EU (China, South-Korea) also have to meet the EU requirements. This prevents motorcycles of a low quality being sold on the European market

The funny thing is that motorcycles produced in countries outside the EU (China, South-Korea) also have to meet the EU requirements. This prevents motorcycles of a low quality from being sold on the European market.

I believe my work demonstrates the impact of the EU: an internal market, with 502 million consumers who use their motorcycles in a technically and sustainably responsible way.

So I can enjoy riding my motorcycle every Saturday to the fullest. I clear my head while driving responsibly and at an appropriate speed. Sometimes it rains cats and dogs. But most of the time I ride the Dutch roads enjoying the good weather.
