Born in 1947. Neukirchen-Vluyn (North Rhine-Westphalia). Training in commerce and agriculture. 1984-1992, Town councillor in Neukirchen-Vluyn. President of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, 2004-2007. Rapporteur and Member of the former Temporary Committee on Climate Change. MEP since 1989.
