Pēc referenduma, kas notika pirms  gada un kurā Lielbritānijas pilsoņi ar nelielu balsu pārsvaru nobalsoja par izstāšanos no ES, 2017. gada 29. martā Lielbritānija piemēroja 50. pantu, tādējādi oficiāli uzsākot Brexit procedūru, dalībvalstij pirmo reizi vēsturē izstājoties no ES, un 2 gadus ilgas sarunas par “šķiršanās norēķinu”.

Eiropas Parlamentam būs jāapstiprina vai jānoraida galīgā vienošanās par izstāšanos, un Parlaments bija pirmā ES iestāde, kas ieņēma nostāju Brexit sarunās 2017. gada aprīlī.

Eiropas Parlamenta nostāja atspoguļo mūsu prioritātes: nodrošināt ES pilsoņu tiesības Lielbritānijā un Lielbritānijas pilsoņu tiesības dalībvalstīs; nodrošināt to, ka Lielbritānija izpilda finansiālās saistības un Ziemeļīrijas vienošanos, kas nepieļauj stingru robežu ar Īriju un nostiprina Lielās piektdienas miera līguma noteikumus.

Rezolūcija būs arī mēraukla, pēc kuras mēs izvērtēsim rezultātu sarunām par Lielbritānijas izstāšanos no ES.

Brexit būs Eiropas Parlamenta dienaskārtības viena no  prioritātātēm turpmākos 2 gadus, kuru laikā norisināsies sarunas starp ES un Lielbritāniju par sakārtotu Lielbritānijas izstāšanos, par pārejas noteikumiem un visbeidzot par mūsu nākotnes attiecību nosacījumiem.
