La commissione per l'occupazione e gli affari sociali è competente per la politica dell'occupazione e per tutti gli aspetti della politica sociale, come le condizioni di lavoro, la sicurezza sociale e la protezione sociale. Essa si occupa inoltre di questioni quali le misure per la salute e la sicurezza sul luogo di lavoro, la politica di formazione professionale, comprese le qualifiche professionali, la libera circolazione dei lavoratori e dei pensionati nonché tutte le forme di discriminazione sul luogo di lavoro e nel mercato del lavoro, eccetto quelle fondate sul genere, che sono invece di competenza della commissione per i diritti della donna.
