La commissione per gli affari esteri è competente per la politica estera e di sicurezza comune (PESC) e la politica europea in materia di sicurezza e di difesa (PESD). È inoltre incaricata di esaminare con attenzione le questioni concernenti i diritti dell'uomo nei paesi terzi. Il suo compito consiste nel rafforzare la dimensione parlamentare delle relazioni politiche dell'Unione europea con i paesi terzi e approvare i programmi di assistenza o gli accordi internazionali. Per quanto concerne l'allargamento dell'Unione, la commissione segue il processo negoziale e raccomanda l'approvazione dei trattati di adesione. Essa è assistita da due sottocommissioni: la sottocommissione per i diritti dell'uomo e la sottocommissione per la sicurezza e la difesa.
