During the 1990s, the Christian Democrats, and the rest of the Italian party system, went through very significant transformations. Still represented at national level by a single party up until 1994, Italian Christian democracy entered into a prolonged evolutionary phase which has led to the foundation of a number of separate political parties allocated to both the centre-right and centre-left of the political spectrum.
