Political System

Republic. Present Constitution adopted on 12 July 1991.

Head of State

President Georgi PURVANOV (reelected in October 2006).
The President is directly elected for a maximum of two consecutive five-year terms. He has the right to appoint the Prime Minister and to return a bill together with his reasons to the National Assembly for further debate. The President is also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Prime Minister

Boyko Borisov (since July 2009). The Members of the Government are appointed by the Prime Minister and approved by the National Assembly.

Legislature

Uni-cameral. The 240 Members of the National Assembly (Narodno Sobranie) are directly elected for a term of four years on the basis of proportional representation (4% threshold).

Governing Parties

The last parliamentary elections took place on 5 July 2009. The greatest number of votes was obtained by the GERB Party. It has formed a minority government with support from other EPP Member Parties.
