We believe that young people are the drivers of growth and getting out of the crisis and, by becoming more entrepreneurial and innovative, can be empowered to drive their own future.
According to the European Commission, 150,000 young people and youth workers participate every year in more than 8000 pan-European projects in what is called the non-formal education sector. These can be protecting the environment in Greece, supporting disabled youth in Slovakia or creating a coding academy in France.
This engagement needs to be harnessed through, for example, EU-funded exchange programmes. A European Commission survey shows that while 29% of all 18-24 year-olds in the EU participated in the 2009 European elections, 60% of participants in youth exchange programmes put their ballot in the box.
Investing in education is essential if we want to offer young Europeans better prospects and build a more dynamic, innovative and competitive economy. Life-long learning is a key priority for the EPP Group.
The EPP Group wants to unleash the innovative power of young entrepreneurs. If not, our best brains will leave, while the rest watch their hopes of a job disappear when our companies move outside the European Union. We want to emphasise entrepreneurship in training and education projects. Young people must also be able to take full advantage of the Digital Single Market to find and create high-quality jobs. We want to free start-ups from unnecessary bureaucracy so young entrepreneurs can focus on what they do best: innovate!
We believe in the capacity of people and in their entrepreneurial spirit, rather than in state intervention to create jobs and bring down unemployment.
