Commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Treaties of Rome

2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome. Signed on 25 March 1957, the Treaties of Rome established the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community. The European Parliament will commemorate this occasion in a solemn ceremony that will take place on Tuesday in the Parliament’s Hemicycle in Brussels.

Safer medical devices

The Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee will adopt new EU rules for safer medical devices on Tuesday. The major achievement of the new Directives is that they will strengthen patient safety and market surveillance. Medical products will be subject to unannounced inspections after they have been put on the market rather than just once, at the time of approval for market entry. Furthermore, there will be an 'implant card' for patients and a DNA test which will be accompanied by prior counselling.

Cross-border subscriptions to online content to be made easier

The cross-border use of subscriptions to online content will be made easier in the EU. On Wednesday, the Legal Affairs Committee will endorse an agreement between the Parliament and the Council in December. The access to paid content has often been restricted due to "geo-blocking". The new EU standards will make sure that online content has portability so that users will be able to access it from anywhere in the EU.

Better support for innovative and social companies

The Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will vote on Wednesday on a Report drafted by Sirpa Pietikäinen MEP on European venture capital funds and European social entrepreneurship funds. The aim of the Commission proposal is to develop the two funds which support young and innovative companies and enterprises aiming to achieve a positive social impact. "The proposal will improve and increase venture capital sources to fund European innovative, clean and future-oriented businesses", says Pietikäinen.

Guarantee Fund for fighting the root causes of migration

In a joint meeting of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Budgets on Tuesday, Members will vote on establishing the European Fund for Sustainable Development EFSD and its Guarantee Fund to address root causes of migration and to eradicate poverty in the long-run. The EFSD aims at supporting investment in regions of Africa for countries that are signatories to the Cotonou Agreement and the neighbourhood as a means to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, thus tackling root causes of migration and offering the sustainable reintegration of returned migrants in their countries of origin. It is therefore consistent with the Union's instruments for financing external actions and with existing investment facilities.
