Safer medical devices

The Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee will adopt new EU rules for safer medical devices on Tuesday. The major achievement of the new Directives is that they will strengthen patient safety and market surveillance. Medical products will be subject to unannounced inspections after they have been put on the market rather than just once, at the time of approval for market entry. Furthermore, there will be an 'implant card' for patients and a DNA test which will be accompanied by prior counselling.

Cross-border subscriptions to online content to be made easier

The cross-border use of subscriptions to online content will be made easier in the EU. On Wednesday, the Legal Affairs Committee will endorse an agreement between the Parliament and the Council in December. The access to paid content has often been restricted due to "geo-blocking". The new EU standards will make sure that online content has portability so that users will be able to access it from anywhere in the EU.

Guarantee Fund for fighting the root causes of migration

In a joint meeting of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Budgets on Tuesday, Members will vote on establishing the European Fund for Sustainable Development EFSD and its Guarantee Fund to address root causes of migration and to eradicate poverty in the long-run. The EFSD aims at supporting investment in regions of Africa for countries that are signatories to the Cotonou Agreement and the neighbourhood as a means to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, thus tackling root causes of migration and offering the sustainable reintegration of returned migrants in their countries of origin. It is therefore consistent with the Union's instruments for financing external actions and with existing investment facilities.
