The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker has nominated the Bulgarian EPP Group Member Mariya Gabriel as the Commissioner-designate for the Digital Economy and Society. Europass: helping people make their skills and qualifications more visible

The Europass service, which helps people communicate their skills, qualifications and experience through the use of standardised document templates and which has more than 60 million CVs in its system, is the best-known European initiative in this framework. Nevertheless, last year, the European Commission decided to revise the Europass framework as part of the so-called 'new skills agenda'. "In times of youth unemployment in many of the EU Member States it is important to provide better services for skills and qualifications to individuals, employers and other stakeholders", said Thomas Mann MEP, the European Parliament's Spokesman for the Europass revision. Next Wednesday, the Employment Committee will vote on the Report which aims to provide better visibility of skills and qualifications in order to support mobility across professions, sectors, regions and borders.

Opening political dialogue with Cuba

Dissidents want only freedom

Opening political dialogue with Cuba

On Tuesday, Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee will recommend the opening of political dialogue and the cooperation agreement with Cuba. However, the EPP Group believes that the latter cannot take place without Cuban authorities opening a democratic process which includes the liberation of all political prisoners, the full respect of human rights, the granting of the freedom of media, refraining from the suppression of the freedom of assembly, and organising free and fair elections.

Effect of Singapore ruling on EU trade

Effect of Singapore ruling on EU trade

In its recent ruling on the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, the European Court of Justice clarified the division of competences between the EU and Members States in European trade policy: most of the competences, such as transport, sustainable development and intellectual property rights which have caused year-long disputes between the EU and its Member States, have been attributed to the European level. In the Oral Question to be adopted this Tuesday on the initiative of Daniel Caspary MEP, the EPP Group's Spokesman for International Trade, Members of the International Trade Committee will urge the European Commission to present its intentions for the future of the trade agreements. The EPP Group believes that separate agreements for policies falling under EU competence and those falling under the responsibility of the Member States should be the way forward.
