Työllisyyden ja sosiaaliasioiden valiokunnan toimivaltaan kuuluvat työllisyyspolitiikka ja kaikki sosiaalipolitiikan osa-alueet, kuten työolot, sosiaaliturva ja sosiaalinen suojelu. Lisäksi sen vastuualueisiin kuuluvat työterveys- ja työturvallisuustoimet, ammatillista koulutusta koskeva politiikka, ammattipätevyys mukaan luettuna, työntekijöiden ja eläkeläisten vapaa liikkuvuus sekä kaikenlainen syrjintä työssä ja työmarkkinoilla. Työllisyyden ja sosiaaliasioiden valiokunta ei käsittele sukupuoleen perustuvaa syrjintää, sillä se kuuluu naisten oikeuksien valiokunnan toimivaltaan.
