Speaking ahead of his visit to Athens for talks with the Greek Government on the priorities of the upcoming rotating Presidency of the EU Council, the Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul, welcomed the announced priorities focusing on jobs, growth and cohesion, and the further integration of the EU – the Eurozone, migration, borders, mobility and maritime policies. When Prime Minister Samaras introduced the Greek Presidency’s programme, he mentioned that its work will be guided by the principle of enhancing civic and societal engagement in the EU, through policies and initiatives aimed at responding to citizens’ everyday problems, concerns and insecurities.

Joseph Daul praised the efforts and the sacrifices of the Greek people during the economic crisis and outlined the importance of European unity:

“Greece, although confronted with an unprecedented crisis, is acting with great responsibility. I truly appreciate the efforts and positive vision of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. I am convinced that he and his government will lead the EU with the same determination and they will take forward important legislative issues. This will also be a sign of the improvement of self-confidence of the country. Our foremost priority is to make sure that people are getting their jobs back, that Europe is producing solid economic growth and that our Euro is strong. Greece is an example of European solidarity and we have proven that Europe is the solution. Our European policies based on the values of solidarity, dialogue and consensus building are bringing real benefit to the people of Europe.”
