EPP Group supports the development of the collaborative economy in Europe.

“The collaborative economy creates new opportunities for consumers and entrepreneurs. It also promotes new employment opportunities, flexible working arrangements and new sources of income. Innovation will bring more of the same”, said Anna Maria Corazza Bildt MEP, the EPP Group's Spokeswoman on a Report which sets out the outlook for new business models such as Uber or Airbnb.

The Report voted today in the European Parliament's Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection calls on the European Commission to evaluate how relevant EU legislation - such as the Services and E-commerce Directives - are currently enforced and to provide guidance to Member States accordingly. After that, the European Commission must assess if there is a need to enhance the legal framework.

“Innovation will bring more of the sharing economy. The EPP Group supports the development of this in Europe. But there is uncertainty over applicable rules combined with regulatory fragmentation at national and local level. This hampers the development of the collaborative economy in Europe and prevents its benefits from materialising fully”, Corazza Bildt explained.

“Only by removing borders, burdens and barriers, can we liberate the forces that exist in our Single Market and boost trust among consumers. We need to ensure a business environment where our collaborative platforms are able to overcome fragmentation, scale up cross-border trade and be highly competitive on the global market”, Corazza Bildt concluded.
