European Parliament, Strasbourg

The aim of the conference on the peace potential of religions, organised by the EPP Group’s Interreligious Working Group, was to raise awareness of the fact that religions can contribute to promoting peace in different ways: by interpreting their holy literature in a non-violent form, by teaching non-violence and humanity, by providing social and charitable activities. This is important to highlight because the media and the public discussion often concentrate on the potential of religions to provoke violence, overlooking their potential to promote peace.

The conference was preceded by an exhibition about the major concerns and the ethic of six world religions (Hinduism, Chinese Religion, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam). It illustrated the six ethical principles of a so-called 'global ethic' (humanity, the Golden Rule, non-violence, justice, honesty, partnership between men and women). This unique approach was largely elaborated by Swiss Catholic Theologian Hans Kung and the Global Ethic Foundation (Weltethos Stiftung in Tubingen, Germany).
