Η Επιτροπή Πολιτικών Ελευθεριών, Δικαιοσύνης και Εσωτερικών Υποθέσεων είναι αρμόδια για την προστασία, εντός του εδάφους της Ένωσης, των δικαιωμάτων των πολιτών, των ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων και των θεμελιωδών δικαιωμάτων, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της προστασίας των μειονοτήτων, που έχουν θεσπισθεί με τις Συνθήκες και με τον Ευρωπαϊκό Χάρτη Θεμελιωδών Δικαιωμάτων. Επίσης, εξετάζει ζητήματα που άπτονται της προστασίας δεδομένων προσωπικού χαρακτήρα. Είναι υπεύθυνη για την εξέταση των κανόνων περί μετανάστευσης και ασύλου, για την ενιαία διαχείριση των εξωτερικών συνόρων και για την αστυνομική και δικαστική συνεργασία σε ποινικές υποθέσεις.
