Europæiske borgere har været udsat for alvorlige terrorangreb de seneste år. Selv om det også er lykkedes at forhindre terrorangreb, har et antal angreb afsløret svagheder og mangler i både lovgivning og samarbejdet mellem medlemsstater. På initiativ af EPP-gruppen, har Europa-Parlamentet nedsat et særligt udvalg om terrorisme, der skal undersøge disse svagheder og mangler. Udvalget vil se på den eksisterende lovgivning og praktiske værktøjer i kampen mod terrorisme og komme med anbefalinger til at forbedre samarbejdet og informationsudvekslingen mellem de nationale håndhævelsesmyndigheder. Udvalget om terrorisme begyndte sit arbejde i september 2017 og vil arbejde i 12 måneder.
