Výbor pro zaměstnanost a sociální věci je příslušný pro záležitosti týkající se politiky zaměstnanosti a všech aspektů sociální politiky, například pracovních podmínek, sociálního zabezpečení a sociální ochrany. Zabývá se také otázkami, jako jsou opatření k zajištění ochrany zdraví a bezpečnosti na pracovišti, politika odborného vzdělávání včetně odborných kvalifikací, volný pohyb pracovníků a důchodců a všechny formy diskriminace, ke kterým dochází na pracovišti nebo na trhu práce, avšak s výjimkou diskriminace na základě pohlaví, neboť ta spadá do kompetence Výboru pro práva žen a rovnost pohlaví.
