Lisbon Treaty strengthens national parliaments - reaction to ruling of German Constitutional Court. Joseph Daul MEP, Chairman of the EPP Group

DAUL, Joseph"The necessary parliamentary control mechanisms by the German Bundestag and Bundesrat must be put in place as quickly as possible in order to allow for a quick ratification of the Lisbon Treaty", the Chairman of the EPP Group Joseph Daul declared in a first reaction to today's ruling of the German Constitutional Court.

"More influence for national parliaments and greater democratic control of the EU decision-making process is only possible with the Lisbon Treaty, not without", Daul added.

"The Lisbon Treaty gives more rights to national parliaments to check whether legislation on the European level is necessary, while extending the co-decision powers of the European Parliament. There is no alternative to a more democratic, transparent and efficient EU."
