Press Release
17/12/2008Car CO2 emissions rules adopted by the European Parliament. Martin Callanan MEP
Car emissions will be significantly cut without damaging Europe's car industry following a vote on a report which is part of the climate and energy package voted through by MEPs today in the European Parliament.British MEP Martin Callanan, who was the EPP-ED Group's Shadow Rapporteur for the report and one of Parliament's representatives in the trilogue negotiations, welcomed the result.
Carmakers will be required to reduce emissions by 18% over the next six years. CO2 emissions will be reduced to 130g per KM between 2012 and 2015, rather than by 2012 as originally proposed. A long-term target of 95g by 2020 will also be introduced.
Mr Callanan said: "Today's vote shows that car manufacturers will be encouraged to go green as a result of incentives for investment in clean technology."
