25/09/2007Origin Marking: to better inform the consumer, Joseph Daul, Chairman of the EPP-ED Group
"The European Union attaches the greatest importance to information transparency for consumers, and in this respect, signifying the origin of products is fundamental", said Joseph Daul, EPP-ED Group Chairman and signatory of the Written Declaration on origin marking. Joseph Daul will present this Declaration during a joint Press Conference with Commissioner Meglena Kuneva, Commissioner for Consumer Protection, and representatives of other political groups on Wednesday, 26th September 2007 at 11.30 am in the European Parliament Press Centre.
"Some of the largest commercial partners of the European Union, such as the United States, Japan, and Canada, have already adopted provisions for compulsory marking of the origin of products. We should guarantee the same conditions within the Union. Also, I fully subscribe to the proposal for a regulation of the Commission on the indication of the country of origin of certain products imported from third countries into the European Union", added the Chairman of the EPP-ED Group.
"We invite Member States to adopt this proposal without delay, in the interest of consumers, industry and the competitiveness of the Union, concluded Joseph Daul.
