13/06/2004Statement by Mr Ioannis Varvitsiotis, head of the list of Nea Dimokratia (EPP-ED Group) on Nea Dimokratia's victory
Today's victory of Nea Dimokratia is a major achievement as it confirms the result of the general election, which, three months ago, lead our party back to power. Our party remains the largest in Greece, it has increased its seats in the European Parliament, despite the reduction of the country's seats by one (24 instead of 25), and it has increased its votes as percentage.
Today's result also reflects the confidence of the Greek people to our government and rewards the work that our members have achieved in the European Parliament during the last term.
Nea Dimokratia comes out of today's ballot stronger and with an increased responsibility towards the Greek people. Our intention is to work hard during the next five years, within the framework of the EPP-ED Group -the leading political force in Europe- in order to promote the European integration via the Constitution and strengthening of EU's institutions after the historic enlargement and promote the Common Foreign and Security policy.
Our commitment towards the Greek voters is to do equally well and even better than our fellow MEPs since 1981, when our country joined the European Union thanks to the relentless efforts of our party and despite the aggressive hostility of the other parties.
Today everyone pays tribute to the enlightened leadership of Constantine Karamanlis who was the architect of Greece's accession.
