Budget 2009

The European Parliament will discuss and vote on the general budget for 2009 to conclude its first reading on Thursday 23 October.

The European Parliament's decision-making power on the EU budget is one of its most important. It is also a clear manifestation of accountability in the Parliament. Several EPP-ED MEPs are responsible for various aspects of the EU Budget - Laszlo Surján MEP (Hungary), Janusz Lewandowski MEP (Poland), Reimer Böge MEP (Germany) and Salvador Garriga Polledo MEP (Spain).

Following the vote in the Budgets Committee, the European Parliament presently foresees a total budget of €136.028 billion in commitments and €124.489 billion in payments for 2009. This would account for 0.959 percent of the European Union's Gross National Income.

The EPP-ED Group, in these times of a financial crisis, prioritises the security and safety of the citizens. The European Parliament's first reading of Budget 2009 will illustrate the EPP-ED Group's successful leadership on the recent crisis, since their proposed amendments increase funds spent on promoting growth and job creation.
