EPP-ED Public Hearing on Nanotechnology

Giles Chichester MEP (EPP-ED, United Kingdom)
Explaining the science and identifying the issues necessary for political action are the aims of a public hearing on nanotechnology, organized by the EP-ED Group in the European Parliament on Wednesday, 3rd March 2004, from 15.00 hrs to 18.15 hrs in room ASP 3E2 in the European Parliament in Brussels. Chaired by Giles Chichester MEP, several leading European experts have been invited to contribute their expertise to the seminar. Professor Mark Welland from the University of Cambridge will give an introduction on what nanotechnology is and why governments, industry and science alike feel it is so important. The societal implications of nanotechnology will be reviewed by Dr. K. Eijkel, the director of the Nanotechnology Institute Mesa and Technical University Twente (NL). As with all public high-technology debates, it is extremely important to separate fact from fiction: Prof. Wolfgang M. Heckl from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich and Ms. Fiona Fox from the Science Media Centre at the Royal Institution (UK) will discuss ways for responsible scientists to promote dialogue. Concluding the hearing, Dr Renzo Tomellini from the EC Nanotechnology Programme and Tim Harper from the European Nanotechnology Business Association (ES) will investigate what other economic areas are doing, and how their strategy differs from that of European countries.
